That youngster, now all grown up, has announced she is running for public office in Indianapolis, details about which can be found at “Civic involvement and chocolate were early favorites of mine,” the candidate candidly admits with a laugh. Fanning, who grew up outside Indianapolis and attended Zionsville Community High School, received a bachelor’s degree in educational studies and linguistics from Emory University. She is running as a Republican for City-County Council, District 2. Her opponents are Democrat lobbyist Kipper Tew, and Libertarian insurance agent Sam Goldstein. Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Fanning’s fans describe her as energetic, optimistic, hard working, and personable. She describes herself as a dog lover, sports fan, fine wine connoisseur and businesswoman. Why is she running for office? Good question. “Politics has never been on my bucket list,” she responds. “Serving my community and being as engaged as possible in my city has been a priority throughout my life. Coming from the private sector, I have a record of connecting others, finding solutions, and ultimately creating a positive impact.” Fanning feels she brings a practical and pragmatic approach to governing, formed and forged by deeply personal experiences. Examples: TEACHING: “I worked as a teacher at the Emory Autism Resource Center, helping pre-Kindergarteners on the Autism spectrum and their parents improve cognitive language skills and training.” VOLUNTEERING: “I had always wanted to experience the third world, and I got my chance as a Kennedy School (Harvard University) World Teach volunteer. I spent a summer in the Galapagos Islands piloting an all-ages learning center for English as a second language in a global eco-tourism development effort.” CRISIS MANAGEMENT: “When my dad lost his battle with cancer in 2009, I immediately went to work managing his company’s real estate portfolio in San Francisco. Enduring an economic crisis and real estate market collapse (2009-2011), I strategically positioned the company’s assets.” The City-County Council candidate’s professional experience includes owning the Brick Street Inn in Zionsville, managing her late father’s real estate portfolio and working as the marketing and communications director of AquaSpy, an agricultural technology company. She presently owns Grey Market Wine and Ike & Fritz Ventures, a marketing consulting firm. Fanning says she has a passion for entrepreneurship and community service. A quote she likes to share is from the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., in which he said: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ ” She believes, “We absolutely can impact our world for the better, one action at a time,” adding, “I think that continuing to learn and challenge myself is important, so I try to stay as involved as possible.” Active in the Indy Chamber of commerce for a decade, Fanning served as the President of the Indy Chamber Ambassadors in 2012, sitting on both the Indy Chamber Board of Directors and the Membership Marketing Committee. “I attended the Leadership Exchange trip to Portland, Oregon, with the Indianapolis delegation in 2012 that focused on learning best practices in education, sustainability and mass transit,” she said.
