I was 10 years old when I experienced my first Independence Day celebration in our new neighborhood of Bethesda. The excitement from that night was a stark contrast to the 26 months before when my family was still living in refugee camps after fleeing Vietnam. As I sat together with family and neighbors that warm summer night, I was reminded of the difficult sacrifices my parents made to leave everything behind to start a new life in the land of the free and home of the brave. Today, I am even more grateful to call this country and county my home. That’s why I have spent a lifetime working to give back to the country that has given so much to me. Here in Montgomery County, I have worked to help resettle and serve over 25,000 refugees and immigrants, as a longtime board Chair and President of the Association of Vietnamese Americans. I have stood up for the rights of diverse communities through civic participation, and I have been pro-active in promoting voter education and outreach among various communities throughout Montgomery County. As I look back, that night of celebration with family members and neighbors meant something to me: I saw the promise of America. What makes this country so great is that it paved the way for Americans like me to become a productive citizen and give back to my country. Today, I participated in the July 4th Parade at Leisure World in Silver Spring, MD along with my wife Tonia, family members and a diverse group of friends. As we traveled down the street, waving to the parade attendees, I realized that only in America can a former political refugee celebrate democracy as a political candidate. As we celebrate the birth of this nation, please stand with me and support my candidacy for Montgomery County Council, At-Large.
