Benjamin L. Cline’s resignation after his election to the U.S. House of Representatives. Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, M. Kirkland Cox, issued a writ declaring the election date to the registrars in the effected counties last night. The 24th House of Delegates District includes Bath County, Buena Vista City, Lexington City, Rockbridge County and parts of Amherst and Augusta County. Cline defeated his Democratic opponent, Jennifer Lynn Lewis in last Tuesday’s election in Virginia’s 6th Congressional District. He had represented the 24th Virginia House District since 2002. To vote in the Dec. 18 special election, eligible Virginians who live in the 24th district must be registered by Tuesday Dec. 11, 2018. Voters can register online by 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 11 at Virginia Department of Elections citizen portal, vote.virginia.gov or in person by 5 p.m. on Dec. 11 at their local voter registration office. Voters can find the location and hours of their local voter registration office at vote.virginia.gov, where they can also find out more about voter registration requirements or check/update their voter registration information. Dec. 11 is also the deadline for eligible voters to request a mail-in absentee ballot at their local voting registration office, by mail, by fax or online at vote.virginia.gov. Requests must be received by 5 p.m. on Dec. 11. In-person absentee voting for the special election ends Saturday, Dec. 15 at 5 p.m. Eligible voters may cast ballots at their local voter registration office during normal business hours. Local offices will also be open Saturday, Dec. 15 for the last day of in-person absentee voting. More information about absentee voting is also available at vote.virginia.gov. Party nominations and all other candidate filings are due to the Department of Elections by this Monday, Nov. 19, at 5 p.m. in order for the candidate to appear on the Dec. 18 ballot.
